Emily Burns,
Child Psychotherapeutic Counsellor

Counselling for Children and Young People

Emily offers support for children and young people and their parents through one to one counselling for the child, parent-child work and/or parent support.

Using the child or young person’s own language of play, art, imagination and metaphor Emily supports them to express the feelings they are not able to communicate using words and are not often aware of on a conscious thinking level. With this kind of support their feelings can become less frightening and overwhelming and they can develop more capacity to express themselves to those around them.

Emily supports parents to understand the reasons behind their child’s difficulties and gives strategies and practical ideas for supporting their child at home.

This work is suitable for children and young people age 3-19 and work can be done with both parent and child together for children under 3.

Emily is a graduate of the Institute for Arts in Therapy and Education and the Centre for Child Mental Health with a Diploma in Child Counselling and Child Psychotherapeutic Counselling. Her training and approach to the work is to use the creative arts involving play, art, music, drama, voice, song, story, poetry, movement, relaxation, visulations and meditations.

Emily is also a yoga teacher and is running yoga therapy groups suitable for girls age 11-14 who experience stress, anxiety, body image issues, medical conditions, low self esteem.

Child Counselling can help with issues such as: bullying, academic difficulties, anxiety, separation anxiety, bereavement, divorce and separation, overwhelming emotions, depression, shyness, confidence, behavioural difficulties, body image, self harm, self esteem, trauma, fostering, sibling difficulties, difficulties in relationship with parent, impact of medical conditions / disability.

Emily has worked as a Child Counsellor and Therapy Service Manager for the well known charity Kids Company and as a Child Counsellor for other known charities Changing Faces and Sussex Central YMCA. She currently works for The Priory as a Child Therapist on the Adolescent inpatient ward and with child and adolescent outpatients as well as having her own private practice and delivering a therapy service for East Sussex Social Services.
