A Foundation Course in Group Analysis is a comprehensive training program designed to introduce participants to the fundamental concepts and skills of group analysis, a therapeutic approach that focuses on understanding group dynamics and the unconscious processes that occur within groups.

The course typically covers the following key areas:

  1. Introduction to Group Analysis: Participants are introduced to the history, theoretical foundations, and principles of group analysis as developed by S.H. Foulkes and other prominent theorists. They gain an understanding of the unique features of group therapy and its applications in various settings.

  2. Group Dynamics: The course explores the dynamics that emerge within groups, including communication patterns, power dynamics, roles, and conflicts. Participants learn to recognise and analyse these dynamics to gain insights into individual and collective experiences.

  3. Group Process: Participants are taught to observe and analyse the group process, focusing on how members interact, communicate, and influence one another. They learn to identify themes, patterns, and unconscious processes that emerge within the group, helping them understand the underlying dynamics at play.

  4. Therapeutic Factors in Group Analysis: The course explores the therapeutic factors contributing to positive change in group therapy. Participants learn about factors such as universality, group cohesion, catharsis, and insight, and how these factors can be utilised to promote personal growth and healing within the group context.

  5. Facilitation Skills: Participants develop skills in facilitating group sessions, including creating a safe and supportive environment, managing group dynamics, promoting participation and engagement, and handling challenging situations. They learn to balance individual needs with the group's needs as a whole.

  6. Ethical Considerations: The course addresses ethical issues and considerations specific to group therapy, such as confidentiality, boundaries, and the role of the group therapist. Participants learn to navigate these ethical challenges and maintain a professional and ethical practice.

  7. Experiential Learning: The course typically includes experiential components where participants engage in group exercises and simulations. This allows them to experience being a group member and gain firsthand insights into the dynamics and processes of group therapy.

  8. Supervision and Reflection: Participants engage in reflective practices and receive supervision and feedback from experienced group analysts. This enables them to integrate theoretical knowledge with their practical experiences and develop their skills as group therapists.

Overall, a Foundation Course in Group Analysis provides a comprehensive introduction to the theory, practice, and skills required for effective group therapy. It equips participants with a solid foundation in understanding group dynamics, facilitating group processes, and applying group analysis principles to promote healing, personal growth, and well-being in group settings.
