Led by Hulya Hooker and Rory Singer, this workshop is designed for trainees and qualified counsellors and psychotherapists who wish to deepen their understanding of the inner critic, both in their own experience and in their clinical work.
The voice of the inner critic can be relentless: undermining confidence, fuelling shame, and keeping us stuck in self-doubt. Clients often present with its effects, and therapists are not immune to its influence themselves. Yet, with awareness and compassion, this “inner tyrant” can be recognised, externalised, and transformed.
In this two-hour workshop, we will explore:
How to recognise and externalise the voice of the inner critic
Ways of developing a compassionate “inner ally” to respond to self-criticism
Practical strategies to support resilience, self-worth, and a kinder internal dialogue, for both ourselves and our clients
The session combines psychological insight with two guided experiential exercises. You will leave with tools you can integrate into your practice, alongside a felt sense of how these approaches work in the therapy room.
This workshop offers a reflective and supportive space, encouraging therapists to explore their own relationship with the critic while gaining skills to better accompany clients in theirs.
Dr Hulya Hooker is a qualified Psychologist, Counsellor and a fully trained Psychotherapist (UKATA registered) who supports clients through her private practice, Sense of Self Counselling.
Rory Singer is a UKCP-registered Psychotherapist and Clinical Director of New Road Psychotherapy.
