A warm, comfortable New Road therapy room with two armchairs

You can start without having the right words.

Some people come with a clear difficulty in mind. For others, it’s harder to explain. You may feel anxious, low, overwhelmed, disconnected or caught in patterns that keep returning. You may simply know that something isn’t right.

You can begin with whatever feels true now. Part of the consultation is helping you think about what kind of support might fit.

Frequently asked questions

There is no set length of time. Some people come for a short period to focus on one issue, while others find longer-term therapy more helpful. It depends on why you have come to therapy, what you want to explore and how the work develops. Your therapy may be for a fixed period or may continue without a set end date, depending on the service and therapist. You and your therapist can agree what is right for you and review it as you go.

Your relationship with your therapist is an important part of therapy. You should feel respected, listened to and safe enough to speak openly. If something does not feel right, you can talk to your therapist about it, as the conversation itself may be helpful. You do not have to continue with a therapist who does not feel right for you. You can contact New Road to discuss working with someone else.

Yes. What you say in therapy is private, and your therapist will explain how confidentiality works when you begin. They may discuss their work with a professional supervisor, but will protect your identity wherever possible.

There are a few situations where your therapist may need to share information. These include a serious risk of harm, a concern about someone’s safety or a legal requirement. If it is safe and appropriate, your therapist will talk to you before sharing anything.

New Road offers therapy online and in person. You may be able to move between the two if your therapist works in both ways and a suitable room is available. Tell us during your initial consultation if this flexibility matters to you. You can then agree any changes directly with your therapist.

No. You can contact New Road and book an initial consultation yourself. You do not need a GP referral or a formal diagnosis. During the consultation, you can explain why you are looking for therapy, what you want help with and what type of support may suit you.

Counselling and psychotherapy are both types of talking therapy, and they often overlap. Counselling often focuses on a particular difficulty. Psychotherapy may take place over a longer period and look more deeply at repeated patterns, relationships and earlier experiences.

These are not strict definitions. A therapist’s training, experience and way of working will usually matter more than their title. It is also important that you feel comfortable working with them.

Yes. You can read our therapist profiles and tell us if you would like to see someone in particular. This will depend on whether they are available and whether their experience and way of working suit your needs.

If you are not sure whom to choose, your initial consultation can help you decide what you are looking for. We will then do our best to match you with a suitable therapist.

Yes. New Road currently offers lower-cost therapy for £27 per weekly session. These sessions are with therapists who are nearing the end of their professional training or have recently graduated and are working towards professional accreditation. A suitably qualified senior counsellor regularly supervises every lower-cost therapist.

You will first attend an initial consultation so we can understand what you need and check that this service is right for you. If you need more specialist or in-depth support, we may recommend one of our private therapists instead.
