A lower fee does not make the work less meaningful.

Cost can make regular therapy feel out of reach. This service offers adults a steady weekly space to explore anxiety, low mood, stress, relationship difficulties, confidence, life changes or a more general sense of feeling stuck.

The focus is thoughtful, consistent therapy for many of life’s common concerns. As this is a general rather than specialist service, the initial consultation gives us time to understand what you are looking for and whether it is a suitable place to begin.

Frequently asked questions

The service is for adults who want affordable weekly therapy. It can help with anxiety, low mood, stress, relationship problems, low confidence, work pressures, life changes or feeling stuck.

You will first meet a senior therapist for an initial consultation. This helps us understand what you need and decide whether the low-cost service is right for you. The service offers general therapy and may not be suitable if you need more specialist or in-depth support.

Low-cost therapy costs £27 for each weekly session. Before therapy starts, you will have a separate initial consultation with an experienced, fully qualified therapist. This costs £50 in person or £40 online. The consultation helps us understand your needs and decide what should happen next.

Your therapist will be either a student nearing the end of a professional counselling or psychotherapy course or a recent graduate working towards professional accreditation. Student therapists will be completing the supervised placement hours required by their course.

After your initial consultation, we will consider your needs and availability before matching you with a suitable low-cost therapist.

A student therapist is nearing the end of their professional training and works with clients through an approved placement. A recent graduate has finished a counselling or psychotherapy course and is gaining further experience while working towards professional accreditation.

They will not have as much experience as some of New Road’s private therapists. However, they work in a structured professional setting and have regular clinical supervision from a qualified professional. For recognised counselling courses, working with real clients under supervision is an assessed part of the therapist’s training.

Every New Road low-cost therapist has regular supervision with a senior counsellor who holds a supervision qualification. During supervision, the therapist can think carefully about their work, consider your needs and check that they are working safely and ethically.

The supervisor does not replace your therapist or decide what happens in every session. They support the therapist’s professional judgement and development. They also help the therapist recognise when a client may need different or more specialist support.

Yes. The fee is lower because the therapist is at an earlier stage of their professional development, not because you will receive less care, respect or confidentiality. New Road describes the service as safe and confidential and follows professional guidance from organisations including BACP and UKCP.

Your therapist may discuss their work with a clinical supervisor as part of safe professional practice. These discussions are confidential. Your therapist will explain how they protect your information, which professionals may have access to it and the few situations in which they may need to share it, such as a serious safety or safeguarding concern.

Sessions take place every week at a regular time agreed with your therapist. This service does not offer sessions every two weeks or once a month.

If the service is right for you, you can choose therapy for a fixed period or without a set end date. There is no single length of therapy that suits everyone. You and your therapist can agree how long you may need and review this as the work develops.

The initial consultation helps us decide whether the low-cost service is right for you before therapy starts. As it offers general therapy, it may not suit people who need specialist knowledge or more experienced clinical support.

If we identify this during your consultation, we may recommend one of New Road’s private therapists instead. If your needs change or become clearer after therapy starts, your therapist can discuss this with their supervisor and talk to you about a more suitable next step.
